Methods

The Observer Program database consists of fish. invertebrate. and marine mammal observations collected by fishery biologists while deployed on board commercial fishing vessels or at shoreside processing plants participating in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska groundfish fisheries. This database covers observations from 1993-2004. The specific data components collected are outlined in the Groundfish Observer Manual. Once received by NOAA Fisheries. these data are extensively checked for quality. Each record represents the summary of all the observations made for a given taxa in a given year from each 20km by 20km grid square; counts and weights are statistical estimates.Over 300 certified groundfish observers each year on a variety of commercial fishingvessels. over 37.000 data collection days annually. Unit of abundance = IndCountInt, Unit of biomass = Weight
