Methods

Underwater visual censuses (UVC) and photography were used to quantify local density and biomass of larger benthic. demersal. and pelagic fish species. Cryptic species were not quantified. A first diver registered the identity and size (total length; TL) of each fish encountered within a 4 m-wide tunnel along each transect. Visual estimates of size were more than 90% accurate. as determined by comparisons of in situ estimates with direct measurements of captured individuals. Body mass for individual fishes (weight; W) was calculated using species-specific length:mass conversions (W = aLb. where L is the body length of each individual from visual estimates. and the parameters a and b are constants for each species (P?rez-Matus et al. 2014)). visual sensus trough the transect to 2 m on either side of transect Unit of abundance = CountPerSqM, Unit of biomass = Weight
