Methods

Sampling was carried out using four standardized batteries of 6 gillnets with mesh sizes between 25 and 70 mm between knots (mean area of a battery was 110 m², total sampled area by gillnets for one sampling expedition was 880 m²). Two batteries were placed in the limnetic zone of the lake, one using floats for keeping the battery on the surface of the water column and another using weights for keeping the battery at the bottom of the water column. The other two batteries were placed in the flooded igapó forest, one at the bottom of the water column and the other on the surface. Each battery was installed twice a single day, one for encompassing the sunrise and another for encompassing the sunset. The sunrise sampling included installing the gillnets around 5 am and retrieval around 9 am. The sunset sampling included the installment of the gillnets around 4 pm and retrieval around 8 pm.
