Methods

Fish populations were estimated using visual censuses by scuba divers in 50 m x 5 m transects. For each transect, the diver selected a starting point, descending to -15 m and following a measuring tape while staying at that depth. They counted fish in the censused area assigning each observation to one of these abundance classes: 1, 2-5, 6-10, 11-30, 31-50, 51-100, 101-200, 201-500, >500. Siche of each individual was estimated by approximation to 2 cm classes. All the censuses were carried out between 10h and 15h with favourable sea conditions. Small, cryptic species were ignored because they require different sizes of sampled area. Densities were reported as Individuals per 250 m2.
